Florida Dental Practice Adopts High-Tech Textile Standard

Growing safety concern prompts change in uniforms

(ORLANDO, Fla.) Aug. 31, 2010 – As Labor Day approaches, people are confirming plans for beach trips and fireworks, while one Florida dental practice is celebrating with their employees in a different way.  Miami-based Towncare Dental is converting all their staff uniforms from common scrubs to high-tech, fluid repallent Vestex™ performance medical apparel.

“It seems fitting to make this change on Labor Day,” said Towncare President Michael Bileca, “as the holiday originated as a result of worker safety concerns. Using Vestex in our practice is part of our continual push to improve patient health and employee safety.”

Vestex was developed by Orlando-based Vestagen Technical Textiles.  It uses exclusively licensed and patented technology to repel blood and bodily fluids, wick away perspiration and it contains an antimicrobial to control odor. The innovative, nanotechnology-based textile helps prevent contamination of the clothing while keeping the wearer clean, cool and dry.

Engineered as a first line of defense against blood and other bodily fluids, Vestex comes at a time when the nation’s health care industry is on high alert.  A number of regulatory organizations and professional associations, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, are looking at the issue of infection control, especially in outpatient facilities such as dental offices.  From cleaning products to textiles every area is being evaluated for the potential to help reduce contamination of the healthcare worker and the patient.

Why are textiles a critical part of the clean equation? Mounting data suggests that microbial contamination can occur via the physical transfer of micro-organisms from textiles such as scrubs, lab coats and bed linens.

“It’s well documented in the medical literature that fluid barriers protect workers in a clinical setting, but most of them are hot and uncomfortable to wear,” said Ben Favret, President and CEO of Vestagen.  “Vestex is a breathable, comfortable solution, yet maintains the barrier protection workers need to stay safe.”

The forward thinking of Towncare’s CEO means the company’s 45 dental practices and 600 employees throughout the state of Florida will get to take advantage of these high-tech garments.

“Health care is rapidly changing and advancing,” said Bileca.  “As one of the largest dental groups in the country, it is our responsibility to be innovative and stay on top of what provides the best care for our patients and the best working conditions for our employees.”
